Whose idea is the ECDL?

Many of the governments of Europe have agreed that they need to improve the computing skills of its citizens.

To ensure this occurs properly they have agreed the ecdl syllabus of the course for the whole of Europe and it is hoped that this will lead to uniform computer skills.

The ECDL has been approved by the Department for Education and Skills in the U.K.

Do you supply all of the ecdl course materials to learn?

We supply everything you need to successfully complete the ECDL course. We have found that studying the ecdl in the comfort of your own home or office is the best way to study these materials.

We supply an ecdl manual and a glossary, and also all of the other ecdl course materials on an interactive CD.

Everything you need is supplied and we think that our ecdl materials are the best available and you will find them a pleasure to use. You will then have to sit the ECDL exams at an exam centre if you want to receive the ECDL qualification.

There are hundreds of ecdl exam and test centres around the UK and there is very likely to be one close to your home.

Where do I do the ecdl course?

You can use the ecdl study materials we supply on any compatible computer. You can study at home, at work, at a library, in fact almost anywhere.

We have found this gives you the greatest flexibility and you can study at times which suit you.

How long do I have to study the ecdl course materials?

You can take as long as you want too. You study when its convenient.

The latest rules say that once you have sat an ecdl exam you have three years to complete all of them. You should check this once you have done your first exam in case the rule changes.

The whole ecdl course can be completed in approximately 30 to 50 hours of study depending upon how fast you go.

So if you studied just one hour each week you can complete all of the parts in less than one year. We do suggest however that you spend 2 or 3 hours each week on your studies so that you make good progress each study time.

You can also go over any areas of the ecdl course again if you do not feel confident about some aspect of your training.

What kind of computer do I need?

These are the specifications of what is needed. Most modern machines purchased in the last five years or so will be fine.

It is important that you have a sound card and speakers. If your computer does not have speakers then check that you have a sound card fitted and if so simply buy some speakers. A sound card and speakers are very inexpensive and can easily be fitted by a computer shop if you can't do it yourself. If you have any questions please ring our helpline.

What if my computer is very old?

If you have a computer which is very old and you do not want to upgrade it then we can still help you.

We have a lower specification CD which contains all of the materials you need. It is less interactive but this is not a problem as the course still guides you through all of the materials in an excellent way. This has been designed for lower specification computers.

So long as your machine has a CD player then you can study with ECDLtutors.com.

If you have any questions please ring our helpline.

What if I need some help when studying the ecdl?

Please feel free to make use of the student help area on this website once it is completed. Our target is to have this online area finished by the early part of 2004.

Most students are able to study using the course materials we provide without any difficulties but if you need any help just give us a call.

Do I have to take the ecdl exams to be able to do the course?

You can study the ecdl training course materials and learn how to use a computer effectively without having to study the exams.

However, the government's intention is for students to take the exams and to receive the qualification. This is the best way to measure the success of the ECDL implementation throughout the country.

We suggest that you start studying and then go and sit the first exam. The beauty of the ECDL is that if you fail an exam you can go and restudy what you need to and then re-sit the exams until you pass!

How do I find an ecdl test centre near to my home?

The government have provided an easy to use test centre locator. All you need to do is go back to our home page and click on the link: " ECDL test centres ".

Follow the instructions and you will quickly find your most convenient test and exam centre.

What will it cost for me to sit all the ecdl tests and get my ecdl qualification?

You will need to buy a log book to keep track of your ecdl tests etc. which costs £25. Most test centres can supply these or you can contact us if you have any difficulties.

You will also need to pay for each exam which is quite small.

The whole cost of the ecdl log book and exam fees should be approximately £100. This is worth it because you will now have a recognised qualification.

Is the ecdl qualification a recognised one?

Absolutely. The whole purpose of the ECDL is to give people the chance to learn the basic skills needed in computers and to then give a recognised qualification.

More and more employers are now asking for evidence of being able to operate a computer and the ECDL qualification is proof of this.

Also regardless of employment needs, people find that by studying the ECDL materials they can now get more use out of their computers and have far more confidence.
